Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated team player to join our fast-paced, service-oriented Clinical Pathology Laboratory. This position provides technical support in the clinical hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis/parasitology, and accession receiving areas of the laboratory conducting a wide range of clinical laboratory tests used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients ensuring 24/7 support for UW Veterinary Care.

Responsibilities:
Tasks:
  • Prepares and processes various biological specimens, including blood, urine, feces, and tissue samples, for laboratory testing and solves problems related to collection and processing.
  • Provides technical support in the hematology/cytology area of the laboratory; performs hematologic analyses, uses hematology instrumentation, prepares smears, and interprets blood cell morphology for a variety of animal species.
  • Provides technical support in the chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, and parasitology areas of the laboratory, uses chemistry and coagulation instrumentation.
  • Records laboratory results and generates reports for veterinarians.
  • Assists with routine maintenance of laboratory equipment; uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, and performs preventative maintenance according to QC task and maintenance schedules.
  • Follows quality control procedures to ensure the reliability and precision of test results, adhering to established laboratory protocols and standards.
  • Provides support in other areas of the laboratory as needed: accession specimens, process according to established procedures; package and submit specimens to referral laboratories, and enter returned results into LIS.
  • Answers phones and assists in clerical tasks, and finding missing specimens or requests.
  • Provides support for out-of-hour, on-call coverage as needed and other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulatory and safety standards, such as OSHA, CLIA, and CAP, to ensure a safe and compliant laboratory environment.
  • Stays informed about emerging trends and best practices in veterinary clinical pathology through ongoing professional development and training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

Required
H.S. Diploma

Qualifications:

Preferred Associate degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or related field. Knowledge of principles and procedures used in clinical hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis/parasitology, accession receiving, and laboratory safety; familiarity with a variety of modern clinical laboratory instrumentation and maintenance procedures; knowledge of quality control and quality assurance practices and procedures. The successful candidate will have strong computer skills and effective communication, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills and be able to work as an effective team member.

License/Certification:

Preferred
MLT - Medical Lab Technician Certification

Required
Certification (or eligible to obtain upon hire) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent organization

Work Schedule:

Schedule is as follows: 9:00am - 6:00pm with a 1 hour unpaid lunch. Occasional on-call and weekend coverage as needed.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $23.00 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
Sign-on Bonus of 3-5% of base pay (based on FTE) to be paid over the first year of employment
