Job Summary

Join our team as an Electrical Systems Senior Design Engineer focused on Enhanced Chassis Control (ECC) technologies. This position will be responsible for overall ownership of the motorcycle electrical system relating to design functions at the vehicle level for Enhanced Chassis Controls, acting as the owner of their design from concept and evaluation to production launch and in-field quality control. Demonstrate understanding of specific components and vehicle system level interactions while possessing technical skills in electronic modules, software and overall system development and performance. Ensure release of a great motorcycle and riding experience.

The Enhanced Chassis Control system includes delivery of rider safety enhancements and cornering rider safety enhancements for the motorcycle. These are a collection of technologies designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking. The systems are designed to aid the rider in controlling the vehicle while accelerating and braking in a straight line or while in a turn. Specific functions include: Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronically Linked Braking (ELB), Drag-Torque Slip Control (DSCS), Traction Control Systems (TCS) and Vehicle Hold Control (VHC).

Hybrid Location
Position will be hybrid with time split between a home office and on-site at our Harley-Davidson Motor Company Product Development Center (PDC) located in Wauwatosa, WI.

Job Responsibilities
  • Deliver robust, optimized designs for vehicle functions and systems while adhering to project targets, performance objectives, high quality, and cost minimization.
  • Author requirements for vehicle functions and system architecture with focus on ISO26262 compliance. Generate plans for development and feature maturity. Partner with a cross-functional team and suppliers to meet program and build milestones. Identify risks and propose mitigations.
  • Develop designs through Tier I electrical component partners and approve designs for production.
  • Verify component & system performance to H-D standards, approve supplier validation, and work with test and verification entities to ensure EE system meets or exceeds targets
  • Perform Design Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (DFMEAs), Design Verification Plan & Reports (DVP&Rs), analyze test results and bring closure to test findings.
  • Develop software verification plans to ensure features are intuitive and robust at vehicle launch.
  • Independently solve complex technical issues and provide solutions to problems using both creative processes and analytical methods.
  • Support vehicle-level system integration activities, regulatory homologation events, pre-production vehicle builds, and vehicle launch builds.
  • Provide technical leadership for enhanced chassis control systems including engagement of diverse stakeholders across H-D and mentoring of other engineers.

This position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or a related technical Degree.

Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of related industry experience. In addition, they will have demonstrated many of the following:

  • Knowledge of whole-vehicle systems with detailed electrical system/component choice, software design, electrical design & integration experience. Ability to work beyond electrical engineering and apply basic electro-mechanical engineering skills/experience.
  • Experience with systems or components used in delivery of enhanced chassis control functions including electro-hydraulic controllers, inertial measurement units and foundation brake technology.
  • Direct motorcycle or vehicle engineering experience (e.g. automotive, power sports, construction, agriculture, aerospace, marine). Strong interest in motorcycle engineering and design. Motorcycle rider or desire to learn is appreciated.
  • Electrical System design/development experience from concept through production launch.
  • Experience authoring requirements, developing test-cases, and establishing traceability in a process that supports product development in accordance with a functional safety process, ISO26262 preferred.
  • Experience with Quality Engineering deliverables, including DFMEAs and Design Validation Plans and Test Reports.
  • Creative approach to solving problems and able to own issue resolution from data collection, data analysis, root cause identification, solution set generation, and selection of optimal solution.
  • Experience with working with electrical systems that utilize controller area networks (CAN), Vector CAN tools, collecting and reviewing CAN logs
  • Ability to communicate technical subjects in a clear, concise manner to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Success using project management tools and principles to deliver on-time and within budget.
  • Ability to work with diverse global teams both internally and externally (suppliers).

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
