Job Description
Job Summary

We are seeking a hardworking individual to assist with land restoration projects and invasive species removal.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time seasonal

HOURLY RATE: $13.00

HOURS PER WEEK: 4-40

Position Summary
  • Plant identification of native and non-native vegetation.
  • Hands-on removal of invasive plants.
  • Removal of seed and fruit from select species.
  • Treatment of all invasive plant species with minimal or no damage to native species in the area.
  • Planting of native forbs, shrubs and trees.
  • Perform mechanical and biological methods to control invasive exotic plants.
  • Conduct intensive habitat restoration.
  • Work with a variety of tools, including but not limited to wheelbarrow, shovel, lopper, handsaw and rake.
  • Perform trail construction and maintenance.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies in good order.
  • Educate public about invasive plants.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MPS Recreation and Hawthorn Glen rules, policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Required

Reports to Land Steward Manager and the Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Education.

Job Requirements
  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position

Preferred Experience
  • Previous work with land stewardship desired.
  • Experience performing physical work
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Natural resource knowledge; should have an understanding of Wisconsin's native plant communities or a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain, on hillside, and in mud.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to properly use safety equipment including protective wear for eyes and ears.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Display a positive attitude and be a team member.
  • Must be able to follow directions and pay close attention to details.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and days.
Working Environment

This work environment includes physical exertion and muscle strain, hiking, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, reaching, repetitive motion, working with tools and equipment, performing tasks in natural setting where ticks, mosquitoes, poison ivy and other obstacles may occur and working in all weather conditions.
