Job Description

Supervises and structures the daily operation of the program, including organization, administration, periodic review and evaluation, continued development, and general effectiveness of program curricula and operating budget. Prepares student sonographers for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exam.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Creates, develops, oversees and administers all aspects of the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  • Coordinates curriculum and conducts classroom instruction that includes demonstration sessions in the technical aspects of sonography and related theory for the practical experience phases of training. Observes students and provides supplemental training as required.
  • Determines and monitors outcomes to assure program effectiveness through creation and evaluation of program goals, mission statement and outcomes. Develops and revises school policies and procedures to ensure program effectiveness, compliance with educational standards, and requirements of professional practice.
  • Collaborates with the program faculty and Advisory Committee in the recruitment and interviewing of potential students. Determines final selection of students and communicates acceptance/rejection to all applicants.
  • Collaborates with the concentration coordinator and/or clinical coordinator(s) in the evaluation of the clinical and didactic progress of students through review of performance evaluations and academic course grades. Determines, oversees and provides appropriate disciplinary action and student counseling as needed.
  • Ensures effectiveness of all clinical affiliates/clinical education centers.
  • Coordinates efforts to provide advanced education for sonographers with the Aurora system; serves as an educational resource as needed for Aurora Health Care.
  • Performs administrative functions and maintains records related to the operation of the program.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Vascular Technologist (RVT) registration issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), and
  • Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with Abdomen issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Med Sonography (ARDMS), and/or
  • Medical Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Med Sonography (ARDMS), and/or
  • Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with OB/GYN issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Med Sonography (ARDMS), and/or
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providerscertification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Sonography or related field.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in a general, cardiac, and/or vascular sonographer position and 3 years of practical experience as a clinical instructor and/or didactic instructor in a sonography program.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Leadership experience should include management of staff, budgets, and multiple human resources functions at the supervisory level.
  • Proficiency in teaching methodology, supervision, instruction, evaluation, and guidance.
  • Strong self-direction and motivation.
  • Ability to compile and assess statistical data.
  • Proficiency in but not limited to the areas of curriculum design, program administration/education, instruction and counseling.
  • Maintains current knowledge of imaging techniques and education methodology through continuing professional development.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) with diverse groups.
