Job/Internship Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Under the observation of the neurodiagnostic tech, performs Electroencephalograms (EEGs), portable inpatient EEG, Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) EEG by applying suitable electrodes on predetermined positions on the patient's head, checking the performance of the electrodes, calibrating and adjusting the test apparatus and selecting both predetermined and special electrode combinations dependent on the individual case under study.
  • Prepares patient for exam and preforms exams and procedures. Gathers a comprehensive patient history, appropriate information from patient, patient's records and family members to include neurological symptomology and medications. Explains test procedures to patient and family members.
  • Performs procedures according to the laboratory standards and implements alternative methods and/or adjusts controls to obtain optimal recordings. This may include appropriate control setting changes on the equipment, use of extra electrodes, extra montages and use of activation procedures.
  • Recognizes patient and or environmental artifact. Documents, eliminates or takes proper measure to monitor the artifact.
  • Debriefs with established Neurodiagnostic tech upon completion of study.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and repairs or reports to supervisor immediately.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Maintains a specialty cart or item, ensuring its completeness and availability. This includes checking the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair.

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providerscertification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).


Education Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Neurodiagnostic Technology.


Experience Required:

  • No experience required.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Must have completed the first semester of on-site learning and clinicals.
  • Proficient in the 10-20 EEG application method.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, twist and lift throughout the day.
  • Must be able to withstand a very stressful and fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to:
  • lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
  • carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to:
  • push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
