We are looking for a motivated and passionate individual to join our vision services team!

This position will focus on providing technical assistance to the eye practice by assisting the physician with appointments and diagnostic testing. We do not require any optical experience, we will provide all necessary training!

What you will do:

  • Work 36 hours each week, Monday-Friday
  • Hours are between 8:00am-5:00pm
  • Have the opportunity to travel to all Gundersen optical locations including: La Crosse Main Campus, Onalaska, Tomah and Waukon

Job Description:

The Ophthalmic Technician I is responsible for providing quality ophthalmic patient care under the direction of an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in accord with standard organizational policies and procedures. Provides a technical assistance to the eye practice thereby increasing appointment availability. Assists the physician in performing routine eye exams and preliminary diagnostic testing procedures and evaluations.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Works collaboratively with ophthalmic physicians, technicians, receptionists and other department personnel to provide eye care services to patients.
2. Assists the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in performing routine eye examination procedures by performing preliminary diagnostic testing procedures of the patient's eye(s) including refractometry, muscle balance, visual fields, tonometry, slit lamp exam and keratometry.
3. Operates and maintains diagnostic and other medical equipment in the department, providing minor repairs when possible.
4. Takes all appropriate actions to make patients comfortable and respond to their concerns, consistent with the mission and values of Gundersen Health System.

5. Witness waste of controlled substances with authorized staff in the state of Wisconsin.Will not witness waste in Minnesota and Iowa, both states require licensed individuals or registered pharmacy technician staff only to witness the waste of controlled substances.
5. Performs other job related responsibilities as needed to ensure successful operation of department/vision center.

Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency

DESIRED
Post High School education in a specialized field: Graduate of a two year Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) accredited Ophthalmic Medical Technologist school


Work Experience:
REQUIRED
2 years of relevant work experience.

DESIRED
1 year working in a comprehensive eye practice.

License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certified by JCAHPO within 18 months of hire date

DESIRED
Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certified by JCAHPO or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) certifed by JCAHPO
