Position Overview

The Vice President, Laboratory Medical and Pathology leads a team of Laboratory Medical Directors and Pathologists and partners with Lab Operations to oversee the strategic direction, operation, and administration of Exact Sciences' U.S. clinical laboratories and pathology operations. This role serves as the primary point of communication with executive leadership and key external stakeholders on related matters. The Vice President will be a proven leader with deep experience in directing academic or commercial clinical laboratories that include molecular and next generation sequencing assays.

The Vice President can be based at one of Exact Sciences' clinical laboratory locations or be located remote with frequent travel to clinical laboratory locations.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assume ultimate responsibility for ensuring clinical laboratories and pathology operations meet requirements, standards, and expectations to include:
    • Duties of clinical consultant, technical supervisor, general supervisor, and testing personnel are performed properly.
    • All laboratory employees and pathologists have the required qualifications and training to perform in their roles.
    • Testing and pathology systems developed and used provide quality services for all aspects of performance.
    • Laboratory conditions are appropriate for testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from hazards.
    • Test and pathology methodologies have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care.
    • Verification procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method.
    • Laboratory employees and pathologists are performing methods required for accurate and reliable results.
    • There is an appropriate proficiency testing program and proficiency samples are tested as required, results are returned within expected timeframes, reports are reviewed to evaluate performance, and corrective action plans are followed if proficiency testing specifications are not met.
    • Quality control and assurance programs are best-in-class and implemented and maintained accordingly.
    • Acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system are established and maintained.
    • Patient test results are reported only when the test system is functioning properly; remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from established performance exist.
    • Test result reports include pertinent information required for interpretation.
    • Consultation is available to clients on the quality of test results and their interpretation.
    • High complexity test performance is supervised on-site by a general supervisor.
    • Policies and procedures exist for monitoring individuals who conduct any phase of testing to assure competency is maintained and identify needs for training and continuing education.
    • Procedural documentation (i.e., manual) is available to everyone responsible for an aspect of the testing process.
    • Responsibilities and duties of each role engaged in any phase of testing are clearly defined in writing, identifying which examinations each role is authorized to perform, whether supervision is required, and whether supervisory or Clinical Laboratory Medical Director review is required before reporting test results.
    • All concerns of test quality and/or safety are reported appropriately to a supervisor or safety officer.
  • Serve as the escalation point of contact for Clinical Laboratory Medical Directors, Pathology leadership, and others as needed. Remove barriers or blockers in a timely manner so that business continuity and effectiveness is maintained.
  • Partner with key internal and external stakeholders, including executive leadership, on complex, strategic matters related to clinical laboratory and pathology operations.
  • Anticipate, project, and plan for future clinical laboratory and pathology resource needs (i.e., staffing, equipment, space), collaborating with stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to delegating tasks and responsibilities, assess employee performance and provide helpful feedback and training opportunities.

  • Ability and means to travel 50% between Exact Sciences locations, including overnight and/or weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD/DO, MD PhD, or PhD degree with certification in Anatomic, Clinical, and Molecular Pathology.
  • Possession of or eligibility for California, Arizona, Washington, and Wisconsin Medical Licenses at time of hire or obtain within 3 months of hire and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Possession of or eligibility for New York Certificate of Qualification in all disciplines relevant to the Clinical Laboratory's current and planned tests at time of hire or obtain within 3 months of hire and maintain throughout employment in position.
  • Established reputation as leader in Molecular Pathology with documented performance, professional accomplishment and publication history.
  • 15+ years of combined laboratory leadership experience and knowledge in the following:
    • Genomics and/or genetics including technology platforms, bioinformatics and somatic variant classification and functional interpretation of somatic variants according to established professional guidelines (e.g., AMP, ACMG, ASCO, NCCN or ESMO).
    • Solid tumor tissue and cell free DNA next-generation sequencing assays and assay validation.
    • Professional guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer (e.g., as published by NCCN, ESMO, ASCO or WHO).
    • Molecular laboratory technology and operations, regulatory requirements, and professional guidelines.
    • Expert understanding of relevant regulations, policies, and standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, etc.).
  • Professional society memberships preferred including CAP, AMP, ASCO, USCAP.

Salary Range:

$340,000.00 - $460,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
