Job Description

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant I (CLA I) performs phlebotomy, assists laboratory technicians in performing routine laboratory tests and related duties. These duties include (but are not limited too): Collection of blood specimens, performs waived testing, performance of clerical and courier functions, collection of chain of custody urine specimens, and specimen processing. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing a high standard of care. All CLA’s are responsible for assisting with blood collections from outpatients, inpatients as well as other possible collections from other patient types that are supported by Memorial Medical Center.

Requirements:

  • Follows and adheres to laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Aware of proper specimen requirements and is able to obtain specimen through: venipuncture, capillary puncture, and urine collection (chain of custody).
  • Effectively uses handheld Rover device.
  • Follows proper patient and specimen identification procedures and labels blood specimens patient bedside.
  • Draws blood specimens in correct tube and correct order of sequence.
  • Assists with setup of cultures and other laboratory specimen preparations.
  • Monitors pending lists, send out lists, and other tracking lists for specimens sent to other facilities.
  • Scans reference lab reports and orders into EMR accurately.
  • Performs routine chemical urine tests, hemoccults, urine drug screen or additional waived testing following demonstrated competency assessment.
  • *Assists Radiology with FNA slide preparation.
  • *Collects chain of custody urine collections and routes documents.
  • Measures and aliquots timed urine specimens or other body fluids as required.
  • Sorting, verification of specimen labeling, order entry and distribution, specimen retrieval.
  • Proper instructions for urine, stool and sputum collections
  • Proper specimen processing based on test requirements
  • Performs processing functions to assure the integrity and quality of specimens for testing.
  • Appropriate use of the HIS and LIS and enters data into EMR.
  • Manage supply inventory and stocks laboratory supplies.
  • Utilizes knowledge of laboratory procedures to prioritize work load and manage situations such as combative patient and/or patients that are difficult to draw for various medical reasons.
  • Act as a laboratory customer service representative.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety standards, keeps work areas clean, uses appropriate PPE and follows hand hygiene guidelines.
  • Works to understand and implement applicable Joint Commission standards.
  • Answers lab phones, schedules, registers, and orders lab testing as appropriate.
  • Assesses purpose of calls accurately and directs calls to appropriate personnel consistently. Is able to resolve problems with a high degree of accuracy within the scope of practice of the position description.
  • Performs quality control, quality improvement, specimen tracking and maintenance procedures as required for shift responsibilities.
  • Accurately documents client complaints and follow-up within a timely manner.
  • Participates in proficiency testing and completes annual competency assessments.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance, corrects them or immediately brings them to the attention of MT/MLT or lab director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by section heads, lab manager, lab director or pathologist.
