The Market Attendant is a multi-faceted position responsible for daily operations of the West Allis Farmers Market; providing administrative and customer support. This position requires a reliable, self-motivated candidate who is able to work independently and serve as an "ambassador" for the market and City of West Allis. The ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people including customers and vendors is crucial. The Market Attendant is tasked with enforcing market policies, answering customer and vendor inquiries, operating the EBT/SNAP program, light cleaning and grounds maintenance, assisting with administrative tasks, and promoting the market as needed.

The regular Farmers Market is open May 4, 2024 - November 30, 2024, on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12 - 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 - 6 p.m. The Market is an event destination in the City of West Allis, hosting the Makers Market, Pawtoberfest, West Allis Night Out; Food Truck Fridays throughout the summer; the Christkindlmarkt in December; and numerous other events throughout the year.

Expected Work Schedule: Market days, T/Th/Sa 11:00am - 6:00pm, May-November; Food Truck Friday dates, every other Friday June 7-September 27, 3-8:30pm; additional office time as needed, additional special events as needed. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of service delivery.

Examples of Duties

  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with Tourism & Events Manager, City of West Allis Staff, vendors, and customers.
  • Promotes West Allis Farmers Market and City of West Allis events to customers and vendors via in person and electronic communications.
  • Assists vendors, community representatives and diverse audience of customers by providing market-related information, conflict resolution and general assistance as appropriate.
  • Greets and assists new vendors and guests at market and special events, ensures vendors set up in assigned locations.
  • Enforces market rules and procedures, and ensures smooth operation of market and safety of guests.
  • Documents and reports injuries or incidents.
  • Reports maintenance issues or concerns promptly.
  • Assists Tourism & Events Manager with vendor management as assigned, including accepting applications, communicating with vendors, and correctly processing vendor payments; assists with coordination of special events as assigned.
  • Processes SNAP/EBT transactions daily and works directly with the Treasurer's office on weekly SNAP/EBT processing and ensuring accurate transaction balances.
  • Light cleaning of Market office, restrooms, and grounds (ex: replenishing soap, paper towel, etc. as needed; mopping or hosing spills; monitoring trash and recycling for overflow and disposing of trash and recycling appropriately).
  • Collaborate with Tourism & Events Manager and Communications Strategist to provide social media content to promote market; provide photos using City-issued cell phone of events and Market happenings.
  • Sells West Allis Farmers Market and City of West Allis merchandise; maintains accurate inventory of merchandise and proactively communicates replenishment needs with Tourism & Events Manager.
  • Works directly with contracted musicians, connecting with them in advance to ensure they know where to unload, time to arrive, assist electrical connections and sets up the FM tent.
Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of recent administrative or customer support work experience including extensive customer service interaction, and cash handling preferred.
  • Ability to enter data and utilize software in accordance with the needs of the Market.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs - including Microsoft Outlook (mail, calendar, tasks), Word (templates, forms, mail merge, reviewing) and Excel; and Adobe Acrobat (PDFs).
  • Experience working with groups of people from diverse backgrounds.
