Job Description
Job Summary

Seeking an individual with a background in environmental education to effectively develop and implement outdoor education field trips for students and classes for the community.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part-time seasonal

HOURLY RATE: $14.00

HOURS PER WEEK: spring season: 5-20, summer season: 5-40

Position Summary
  • Present educational programs and activities for scheduled groups on a seasonal basis.
  • Provide quality instruction and create an atmosphere of leaning through positive feedback and mutual understanding.
  • Instruct and supervise elementary-age children in an outdoor setting through hands-on activities.
  • Responsible for ensuring that programs are taught according to the curriculum developed by Outdoor Education staff.
  • Conduct evening and weekend programs for the scouts, families and adults.
  • Dedicate time to organize educational materials before and after programming.
  • Public relations: including answering telephones, greeting visitors, answering questions and providing information about MPS Recreation and Hawthorn Glen resources.
  • Care of native animal exhibits including repairs and improvements.
  • Attend seasonal staff meetings for the purpose of program evaluation, new program implementation, current program revisions and the assignment of special projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of MPS Recreation rules, policies and procedures related to management and resource protection.
Supervision Required

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of Outdoor Education and Outdoor Education Resource.

Job Requirements

  • As of November 1, 2021, all MPS employees are required to be fully vaccinated. The health and safety of our staff and students is our number one priority. Preferred Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of environmental education experience.
  • College coursework and practical experience in natural sciences desired.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin plant life and animal life.
  • Have a background or interest in natural history and feel a connection with nature.
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to hike on trails and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work well with limited supervision and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and respond to immediate needs of students, emergency situations and program needs.
  • Desire to work with students of all ages, with and without disabilities.
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of animals including arthropods and snakes.
  • Ability to memorize and recall facts and information.
  • A strong knowledge and commitment to the goals of environmental education and land preservation.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and days.
Working Environment

This work environment includes physical activity such as hiking, lifting at least 40 lbs., and working in all weather conditions.
