Our History

JC Imports was founded in 1973 when Wayne Johansen opened a small wholesale and retail import gift business. In 1979, a friend convinced him to convert one of his retail gift shops into a waterbed retail outlet. As a result, The Waterbed Room was opened and became the largest retailer of flotation sleep products in the upper Midwest. By 1993, the company had evolved into two brands: HOM Oak & Leather and Total Bedroom. In 1996, HOM Oak & Leather and Total Bedroom were merged into one entity, HOM Furniture, making HOM a complete full-line furniture retailer. 

In 1959, Gabberts Design Studio & Fine Furniture became a national trend-setter by launching a premier design studio inside a furniture store. Gabberts soon became synonymous with design. Through the years, the company was owned and operated by the Gabberts family, with management responsibilities passing from Don to sons John and Jim. In the 1990s, House Beautiful magazine named Gabberts the “Best Home Furnishings Retailer in America.”  In August of 2008, Gabberts Design Studio & Fine Furnishings was acquired by HOM Furniture. HOM‘s intention when acquiring Gabberts was to venture into the luxury market, leveraging the brand while expanding into new markets, with continued focus on Gabberts reputation for design, product quality and customer service.

Dock86 makes up the third Brand owned by HOM. At Dock86, our buyers find overstocks, one-of-a-kinds, factory sell-outs, showroom models, designer samples and prototypes that furniture makers sacrifice at pricing up to 70% off retail prices found at department stores or fancy mall boutiques. This isn’t your typical furniture store. The product selection is different each week, and even changes from day-to-day.

Today HOM ranks as one of the nation’s largest furniture retailers serving customers in the upper Midwestern states of Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
